Cesena: the Malatesta Fortress
La Rocca is located in the center of the city of Cesena, very close to the wonderful Piazza del Popolo .
It is located on the top of Colle Garampo and surrounded by the Parco della Rimembranza.
The Fortress is characterized by its majestic mass, by the panoramic terraces and by the suggestive walkways inside the curtains.
A fortified citadel is included in the courtyard which includes two imposing buildings: the Main Tower (Mastio or Male), inside which today some original armors that were used for the "Meeting Joust" are exhibited, and the Palatium (Female), where the Agricultural History Museum is located.
The construction of the fort, begun in 1380 with Galeotto Malatesta, continues by the will of his successors Andrea and Malatesta Novello ; it was completely renovated and completed in 1477, during papal rule.
The Rocca is part of a larger system of fortifications that surrounds the city, a system that also fascinated Leonardo da Vinci when he stayed in Cesena in the summer of 1502, commissioned by Cesare Borgia to inspect and overhaul the fortifications of the conquered jurisdictions and improve the defences.
