Classe and the Basilica of Sant 'Apollinare
The early Christian basilica of Classe is one of the most important monuments of Emilia-Romagna, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco because of its splendid mosaics from the Byzantine age.
In 2015 it was the most visited monument in Emilia Romagna with over 150 thousand visitors.
It was built and financed in the first half of the sixth century by the banker Giuliano Argentario at the behest of Bishop Ursicino; it was consecrated on 9 May 549 by the first archbishop Massimiliano and was dedicated to Sant'Apollinare, the first bishop of Ravenna , on the site of his martyrdom and where the remains of some parts of his remains are.
However, Classe is also the gateway to the Pineta di Classe , one of the most important green lungs of Ravenna, and as such an integral part of the great Po Delta Park.
