Ravenna, the capital of mosaics
August 16, 2022
When you visit Ravenna, you don't expect to find so much magnificence in just one city. The numerous basilicas with an often simple external appearance hide unique artistic heritages in the world . And to those who cross their threshold they will show the true soul, that of chests that contain priceless treasures.
A real architectural concentrate where, even today, the influences of the various dominations that have followed one another are still visible. Ravenna, in fact, is the only city in the world to have been the capital of three empires : the Western Roman Empire, the Theodoric Empire and the Byzantine Empire in Europe. But it is not the only record that the city holds. Ravenna is also home to the largest mosaic heritage in the world and 8 sites have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Baptistery of the Arians and the Orthodox, the Basilicas of Sant 'Apollinare Nuovo and in Classe, the Archbishop's Chapel and the Mausoleum of Theodoric.
To visit it, we recommend that you park your car in the San Vitale car park (for a fee from Monday to Saturday at a cost of € 3.00 per day to date). From there you will be very close to the ticket office in via Argentario 22, where you can buy the single ticket to visit:
