Garibaldi square

The main square of Cervia is Piazza Garibaldi, in the heart of our Cervia and is characterized by a pavement of river pebbles and surrounded by historical monuments.
The most important is undoubtedly the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta , begun in 1699 and opened to believers in 1702. The stone facade is incomplete: the original project, which included an elegant marble slab cladding, could not be implemented for the death of the Bishop.
The building is only visible from three sides, since the north one is adjacent to the Palazzo del Vescovado. The bell tower was then added to the church in 1750.
The church has a Latin cross plan, with a single nave and six side chapels.
In the first chapel on the right, without an altar, there is the canvas depicting the Patron Saint of the City San Paterniano, the work of an anonymous person, a baptismal font from the 18th century and, on the sides, the two statues: that of the Madonna del Fuoco holding her arms the Child, and the statue of San Lorenzo, another important figure of Cervia's religiosity.
Also in the large square, immediately in front of the Cathedral, is the imposing Palazzo del Municipio , built in the 18th century. Also admire the small nineteenth-century fountain in the southwest corner of the square, with a square base and four water mouths. The fountain has been completely restored and the water is drinkable. On summer evenings the square is animated with street performances and artisan markets.
